Is Microwave Popcorn Safe to Eat?

As a microwave popcorn enthusiast based in Houston, Texas, I can confidently say that, yes, microwave popcorn is safe to eat. While it was only officially introduced to the mass market in the mid-1980s, this beloved snack has since become a popular pantry staple, so much so that many of us can’t remember a time without it.

But is it healthy? Yes. Microwave popcorn, like stovetop and air-popped popcorn, is made from whole-grain, unrefined and naturally gluten-free popcorn kernels. It contains high levels of fiber, low levels of fat and a healthy dose of phytochemicals, all of which are beneficial to our bodies. Plus, modern microwave popcorn companies strive to use healthy oils and limit their use of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

However, that’s not to say that you can overdo it on microwave popcorn. Obviously if you eat too much of anything it’s not going to be beneficial to your health. Be mindful of your snacking habits and always read the nutritional labels to ensure you know exactly what’s in your popcorn, regardless of whether it’s microwaved or store-bought.
