The Dangers of Eating Soggy Microwave Popcorn

As a popcorn connoisseur and loyal follower of Kernel Kravings, I feel it is my duty to talk a bit today about the dangers of microwaving popcorn and then eating it while it is still soggy. Everyone has experienced it: you throw a bag of popcorn into the microwave, set the timer, and a few minutes later, you have an imperfectly cooked bag of popcorn with several chunks of unpopped kernels and some limp, soggy popcorn.

This can be a bit of a discouraging experience; however, you may still be tempted to eat it due to the slight crunchiness of the popped kernels and the smell of the buttery, savory seasonings coating the popcorn. Unfortunately, eating soggy popcorn can have several negative consequences.

First, the potential for food-borne illness increases when eating soggy popcorn. As the popcorn stays in the microwave for a few extra minutes, the possibility of bacteria growing in the steam pocket trapped inside the bag increases.

Next, the taste of the popcorn itself could be affected by the sogginess. That is, the melted butter and seasonings will have nowhere to cling to if the popcorn is not sufficiently popped, thus reducing the overall flavor of the snack.

Finally, and most seriously, the unpopped kernels and the soggy popcorn can form a choking hazard. If swallowed without chewing properly, they may be dangerous to swallow, leading to choking and other risks.

To avoid these risks and continue enjoying your favorite popcorn snack, make sure to check the popcorn in the microwave after a few minutes and press the “Add Time” button if necessary. Stop the microwave before the popcorn is overdone and you should be safe!
