Making the perfect microwave popcorn goes beyond just following a recipe. For the best results, you need to understand the science behind the cooking process. Popcorn kernels contain a high moisture content and stored starch, which become hot and steamy when you apply heat. The steam expands, causing kernels to burst and turn into fluffy popcorn.

However, this process doesn't happen in isolation. Depending on the type of oil you use, the amount of salt you add, and the microwave's wattage, the texture and taste of the popcorn can vary drastically.

By using the right type of oil, such as extra-light olive oil or melted butter, you can ensure a slightly crisp outer shell and fluffy center. Additionally, the type of salt you use matters as well. Instead of using iodized salt, try using sea salt or kosher salt, as they make the popcorn "pop" louder and give it a better flavor.

Most microwaves come with wattage ratings so make sure the wattage is between 800 and 1200 watts. Any lower and the popcorn won't get hot enough for its outer shell to burst, and too high and it will pop too quickly resulting in burnt popcorn.
