The Strange but True History of Microwave Popcorn

As the popcorn lover and microwave popcorn enthusiast behind Kernel Kravings, I have to share the truth about the strange but true history of microwave popcorn.

Long before microwave ovens were invented, popcorn kernels were coaxed out of their tough husks by placing them over heat, but that process took time and skill. In the 1940s, a scientist named Percy Spencer changed the game when he noticed that experimental radar equipment had melted a piece of chocolate in his pocket. He was curious and decided to experiment with placing popcorn kernels near the powerful radar equipment. The result: the first microwaved popcorn!

For the next few decades, microwave popcorn recipes were the closely guarded secrets of corporations like General Mills. Thanks to those companies, we now have the convenience of microwaving our own popcorn in the blink of an eye.

When it comes to popcorn, we have come a long way in the last hundred years!
